Course Description

This course reviews the most common etiologies, conditions, and medications used in the daily practice of dentistry. It also discusses the various systemic diseases and comorbidities most dental patients face when treated with medications that often cause secondary concerns for the dental provider. Elements of oral health with potential interactions with medications can include: Diabetes, High cholesterol, Hypertension, Osteoporosis, Neurological Disorders, Psychiatric Disorders, Sex Affirmation drugs, and others. Safe practices to mitigate the ongoing threat of the imminent Opioid epidemic as well as an update about medical and recreational cannabis will be discussed. The latest legal mandate by the Board of Dentistry regarding the prescription of Opioid drugs in the State of Florida will be addressed.

Course Objectives

• Review the concepts of Pharmacology, Pharmacodynamics, and Pharmacokinetics.
• Recognize the importance of the proper and timely review of the patients medical health history
• Identify common dental conditions and frequently prescribed drugs and the considerations for dental treatment.
• Identify and select the appropriate antibiotic for the management of acute dental infections.
• Describe the most recent antibiotic prophylaxis recommendations.
• Recognize the appropriate analgesics to manage acute dental pain.
• Differentiate between Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAID), and Opioid drug therapies.
• Learn about the latest Board of Dentistry mandate regarding the prescription of Opioid drugs.
• Describe the benefits and risks that some medications pose to our dental patients.
• Understand the dynamics and implications of our patients health in the long-term use of medical or recreational cannabis
